Our Southwestern desert soils are notorious for being devoid of organic matter. Therefore, in preparing for your new lawn, we suggest you amend your soil with mulch and gypsum. These materials will improve the soil medium and encourage root growth and water retention.
Suggested rate of mulch is two cubic yards per 1,000 sq. ft., rototilled iinto the first 4-6 inches of the soil. Also gypsum at 300 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft.
When your soil is prepared, it is suggested you install an irrigation system at this time. You will save water and apply water evenly on your lawn. If you decide not to install sprinklers, we cannot guarantee the sod. Sod is perishable and needs the right amount of water at the right time. When this is done, you should bring your soil level one inch below your sidewalks and brick borders. Your sprinkler heads should be no higher than 1/2 inch above the soil. When the sod is installed, the sprinklers should not protrude.
Grading the soil is the last step before laying the sod. The more time and care taken will ensure a beautiful finished lawn. The sod is going to conform to the grade. Rake and remove rocks. Smooth the surface of the soil with a wide landscape rake to ensure a level surface. It is recommended to roll with a water ballast roller to firm the soil. Fill in low spots with soil and lightly water 2 days before you lay the sod. You are now ready to install your sod!
