Our Southwest desert soils are very alkaline, and they lack nutrients to keep turf grass green and healthy. Fertilization is the supplementation of nutrients to the soil. There are three main nutrients; Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K).
A fertilizer containing all three of these nutrients is called a complete fertilizer. It is suggested to apply a complete fertilizer at least 3 to 4 times a year. Fertilizers containing trace elements such as sulfur, iron, zinc, magnesium, and manganese should be applied at least once a year. Excessive application rates of nitrogen can produce excessive growth, will produce thatch, increased water use and cause disease problems to occur. Therefore, it is necessary to apply the correct amount of nutrients.
For the "Do it Yourselfers":
Fertilize Every 4 6 Weeks - Lightly!
Fertilizer recommendations:
Winter: Ammonium nitrate ( Nov March )
Summer: Ammonium sulfate ( April Oct. )
Dosage Recommendation:
Pre-fertilize before installation: 3 to 5 lbs. per 1000 sq. ft., and for established lawns.
Problem Resolutions
Weeds: Use "MSMA" to kill weeds in established turf. The grass surrounding the weed will discolor, but will recover.
Nut Grass: Use "Manage" As per the printed label.
Pearl Scale: You use Merit. The chemical should be applied in April or May. Also put down Gypsum and dispersol. This conditions the sil to make living conditions bad for the Pearl, but good for the grass.
Remember - "Round Up" for general weed control outside of the turf.
